Rampion Extension Development Limited have applied to develop an offshore wind farm. The project includes:
- up to 90 wind turbines
- the turbine foundations
- the electrical infrastructure needed to transmit the power into the national electricity network at Bolney in Mid Sussex.
The application site is 13km off of the coast of the city, to the south-west of the existing Rampion 1 wind farm site. The existing wind farm is already south-west of the city and is visible in views from along the seafront, as well as the hills behind.
The application process
The Secretary of State will decide on the application. It is not a matter for our own Planning Committee.
The national Planning Inspectorate examination of the application closed on 6 August 2024.
The findings and conclusions arising from the Examination, together with the recommendation, were sent to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero by the deadline of 6 November 2024.
The Secretary of State's decision was originally due on 6 February 2025. On that date it was announced that The Secretary of State has decided to re-set the statutory deadline for this application to 4 April 2025.
We submitted a Local Impact Report as part of the examination process. In it, we made the case that we support the principal of the development of Rampion 2, but also believe that the impact of the scheme on our coastline was not properly assessed.
