What an emergency is
An emergency is defined as:
- an event or situation that threatens serious damage to human welfare in the UK
- serious damage to the environment in the UK
- war or terrorism, which threatens serious damage to the security of the UK
Fortunately, becoming caught up in a major emergency is rare for most people, but it's still a good idea to take certain simple precautions.

Our responsibilities in an emergency
Our Emergency Planning & Resilience Team is responsible for overseeing procedures to ensure that the council is prepared to deal with major emergencies. In an emergency, the team will work with other agencies, such as the Police and the Fire Brigade, to respond and ensure a quick return to normal.
The Sussex Resilience Forum is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Civil Contingencies Act in Sussex.
