Celebrate Foster Care Fortnight by taking the first step to becoming a foster carer
To mark Foster Care Fortnight, running from 13 to 26 May, we’re celebrating our fostering community and inviting those thinking about becoming a foster carer to take the first steps.
This year’s Foster Care Fortnight campaign theme is #FosteringMoments, recognising the moments that define fostering journeys, the moments that make young people feel safe, and the moments that create memories.
Becoming a foster carer
Foster carers play a crucial role in improving the lives of care-experienced children and young people in Brighton & Hove.
To help prospective foster carers better understand the process, we’ve created a guide outlining the different steps of the fostering journey.
Councillor Jacob Taylor, joint chair of the Children, Families and Schools Committee, said: “Foster Care Fortnight is an important opportunity to thank our fostering community, from foster carers and social workers to fostering friendly employers and other supporters of fostering.
“If you think fostering might be a good fit for your family, I’d encourage you to spend some time exploring the newly launched fostering section on the council’s website.
“One of the key moments that can define and shape your journey to becoming a foster carer is taking the first step by researching the role. We’ve created a range of engaging resources about fostering to make this process as clear and straightforward as possible.”
Fostering resources
The new fostering section on our website was launched to ensure anyone considering becoming a foster carer can access the information they need.
In addition to the step-by-step guide to becoming a foster carer, this includes:
- a payments calculator
- case studies of experienced foster carers
- stories from children of foster carers
- fostering myths debunked
- short films about fostering
- an information pack for prospective foster carers
Upcoming fostering events
We’re also hosting a range of online and in-person events for prospective foster carers.
- Fostering information session at African Chow – Sunday 19 May
- Online fostering information session – Wednesday 29 May
- Online fostering information session – Wednesday 12 June
Fostering Friendly employer
We have been recognised as a Fostering Friendly employer by the Fostering Network. The council supports staff who are foster carers, and those who are looking to become one, by offering paid leave and flexible working options.
