Improvements to Western Road
Work is now complete.
New electronic bus information signs will be installed later in 2025. This is part of a project to replace signs across the city.
Before the improvement works
After the improvement works
Including new road and pavement surfaces, seating and cycle parking.
What we've done
The changes include:
- a resurfaced road
- resurfaced and tidier pavements
- a simpler road layout with a central area to help with crossing for pedestrians
- more cycle parking, seating, and tree planting
- new bus shelters
- new street lighting
Changes at Dyke Road and Queen Square junction
The changes also include redesigning the Dyke Road junction with Western Road. We have removed the traffic lights and made Dyke Road a priority (give way) junction. We have kept traffic light crossings for pedestrians on Western Road and North Street.
This change has reduced waiting time for buses and pedestrians at the Clock Tower.
The image below shows the changes to traffic routes.
Traffic is no longer able to go from West Street to Dyke Road. Access to Queen Square is now to and from Dyke Road.
How we've funded the changes
Funding has come from the Department of Transport after we successfully applied for their:
- Active Travel Fund
- Highway Maintenance Challenge Fund
- Bus Service Improvement Plan
Our Carbon Neutral Fund has also funded parts of the project like cycling infrastructure and tree planting.
