What you'll need to renew a private hire driver licence
Find out what documents you need to renew your private hire driver licence.
Use your reference number to apply
You'll receive an email with a letter and instructions to tell you to renew your licence. Use the reference number on this letter to start your renewal application. Copy and paste the reference number to ensure it is entered correctly.
Upload your documents
You need to upload:
- three forms of identification, such as:
- your passport or birth certificate
- other passport with current visa
- a utility bill or bank statement
- DVLA driving licence
- Passport sized photo – send this as a jpeg
- drivers of wheelchair accessible vehicles must upload one of the following, or bring them with you to your initial appointment:
- Wheelchair Training Certificate
- DVSA Wheelchair Certificate
- Disability training certificate
- NVQ certificate dated within the last 3 years
- CSE certificate - Blue Lamp Trust Taxi Safeguarding course
- HMRC 9-character tax check code - go to GOV.UK to complete a tax check for a taxi, private hire or scrap metal licence
- Enhanced DBS certificate - go to TaxiPlus - Brighton & Hove City Council and select DBS and DVLA check
DBS Update Service
All drivers need to sign up to the DBS Update Service. The government's statutory standards require you to have a recheck every 6 months and update Brighton & Hove City Council.
This must be done within 28 days of being issued your enhanced certificate. Failure to supply an Enhanced DBS certificate and join the Update Service may lead to licence suspension.
We can't renew expired licenses
If you have not renewed your licence before your expiry date you, will have to reapply and successfully pass and complete the various stages of becoming a new Private Hire driver.
