    • Case studies: eCargo Bike Accelerator project

eCargo bikes are electrically assisted bikes with 2, 3 or 4 wheels, designed to carry cargo or passengers.

By law, these are defined as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs) with a maximum power output of 250W and a maximum speed of 15.5mph. They do not require a drivers license or motor insurance to be ridden on the road.

eCargo bikes often have a large lockable container for the safe transport of valuable goods, but can also come with racks or flatbeds for bulky items. Passive or active refrigeration is also available on some models. This makes them highly versatile vehicles appropriate for modern businesses, which nearly every kind of business can make use of.

Commercially available eCargo bikes have capacity to hold up to 2 to 3 cubic metres. They can carry up to 300kg of cargo (plus the rider) which can be supplemented by trailers for even more capacity. Non-assist cargo bikes are also available, though eCargo bikes are ideal for businesses that operate in a hilly urban environment such as Brighton & Hove.
