Charges for residential and nursing home care
How we calculate charges for people living in residential care and nursing homes from April 2024 to March 2025.
Paying for care
All residents of residential homes and nursing homes have to pay towards the cost of their care and support. Many people have to pay for all of their care. The amount you pay depends on your circumstances.
A person who is eligible for Care under the Care Act must have a financial assessment to work out their financial contribution towards the cost of that care. The outcome of their financial assessment is their assessed charge for care service.
It’s important to give full and accurate details of your finances, so you pay a fair amount.
The care provider will set the fees or fee rates. The council may pay towards the total fees subject to the service user’s assessed contribution.
People who have over £23,250 in savings have to pay the full cost of the care service and the council will not make any payment towards the fees charged by the care provider.
You can choose not to have a financial assessment, but you’ll then have to pay the full cost of your care and support.
