About the King Alfred Leisure Centre project
The King Alfred Leisure Centre plays an essential role in providing sport and leisure opportunities in Brighton & Hove. It's our largest sport and leisure facility in the west of the city.
The current King Alfred Leisure Centre is well used, with strong demand for both pools, but parts of the building date from the 1930s and it does not meet modern standards.
Refurbishing the King Alfred would be extremely costly, and it would never be possible to match the energy efficiency or space efficiency standards of a new building.
We're looking to bring forward plans for a new flagship sports and leisure centre which:
- serves the needs of residents
- offers modern and sustainable facilities

Watch the video below to find out more about the project.
The current project to replace the facility began in late summer 2022. Having completed a comprehensive programme to examine potential alternative sites, Cabinet took a decision in July 2024 to deliver the new facility on part of the existing seafront location. That decision was informed by:
- a ‘Green Book’ business case (based on Treasury guidance) developed with sport and leisure experts to comprehensively examine and evaluate the options for delivering the new facility
- the outcomes of a programme of resident engagement to capture views from the city’s communities.
Following that decision, we have been working to appoint the professional design team (comprising the architect and other specialist consultants) to lead the next stages of the design work and the development of the planning application.
Following a comprehensive programme of market engagement to we have appointed Alliance Leisure as the development consultant to lead the next stages of the project. Working closely with Alliance we have brought together, through the UK Leisure Framework, a strong team of professionals with the right experience to take the project forward through the development of a detailed design and on to the submission of the planning application.
Read more about the professional team and the work they will be doing over the coming months.
