About the Falmer Pond restoration project
The Downs to the Sea (DttS) National Lottery Heritage Fund-funded project highlights the importance of water and wetlands in the water-stressed South East of England. A lack of access to and understanding of these vital habitats and resources is threatening the benefits they bring to us all.
The Falmer Pond Restoration Project aims to improve water quality and local aquatic biodiversity and will include (budget and planning permission permitting):
- a reduction of selected neighbouring trees to address the issues outlined above
- removal of silt
- the restoration of existing pond edges to improve water retention and prevent future erosion
- an introduction of an ecologically sustainable water filtration system, such as reed beds
- the enhancement of aquatic vegetation, which will benefit wildlife by providing a refuge and food source for small creatures
- improvements to the water inlets and outlets
- the creation and installation of a new interpretation board focusing on wildlife enhancements, which will complement the existing historical interpretation
