Due to the hot weather, some council services may need to change, but the majority of our services are operating as normal. Read our news story for more information.
Running cables across highways
Do not charge your electric vehicle by running a cable across the public highway from a domestic or business electricity supply. This includes the use of cable mats. Instead, you should use the nearest public chargepoint.
Cross‑pavement charging trial
While some local authorities have trialled cross‑pavement charging solutions, these have not previously been permitted in Brighton & Hove, however Brighton & Hove City Council has secured government funding and a pilot scheme for cross‑pavement charging has been approved.
We will now be introducing a trial of cross-pavement gullies, allowing residents to safely run a charging cable through a purpose-built channel in the pavement to a vehicle parked on the road.
Initially, the trial will be limited to:
- Disabled Blue Badge holders who need to park outside their home
- Brighton & Hove licensed taxi drivers who are looking to switch to an electric vehicle
If you meet this criteria, you will soon be able to register your interest. We will then contact you once the scheme details are finalised and the trial is ready to begin. Please check back soon for information on how to register your interest.
Important information
- Not all locations will be suitable for cross‑pavement charging – a site survey will be required
- You will need to purchase your own approved charger
- Applications must be made via a council‑approved third‑party provider
- You will be required to take out appropriate indemnity insurance
- Government funding is subject to eligibility and may not cover the full cost of installation
Our approach
Cross‑pavement gullies will not be suitable for every resident or street. Our priority remains on expanding the public EV charging network to ensure accessible charging is available to everyone across the city.
