How we protect the environment during weed treatment
Read more about what we're doing to protect the environment, and our use of glyphosate.
Why glyphosate is still used
The council has trialled many alternatives, including manual, mechanical, foam‑stream and hot water treatments. While manual methods can be effective, they are resource‑intensive, treat only surface growth and allow roots to regrow, increasing long‑term problems.
Protecting the environment
CDA applies large droplets that adhere to target vegetation, reducing drift and environmental risk compared with traditional spraying.
Contractors must provide risk assessments, environmental impact assessments, spill response plans and proof of PA1 and PA6 certification as part of the procurement process.
Long‑term plans
The approach will be reviewed after the 2026 programme to inform plans for 2027. Once weeds are under control, the council will aim to reduce glyphosate use to the lowest possible level and continue exploring alternatives.
