Temporary event notices
Short-term licensing of your premises for alcohol, music, dancing or sports.
About Temporary Event Notices (TENs)
You may need a TEN if you want to:
- hold a small event
- sell alcohol
- provide regulated entertainment
- provide late night refreshments - hot food or drink between 11pm and 5am
TEN's allow small-scale events involving the sale and or supply of alcohol, regulated entertainment or provision of late-night refreshments to take place without the need for a full premises licence.
Apply for a TEN
- Download the application form.
- Complete all sections of the form.
- Submit your application online. You will need to pay the fee online and upload your application form.
If you are asked for a postcode on GOV.UK, use: BN3 3BQ.
Requirements
The key requirements are:
- capacity - maximum 499 people at any time, including staff
- duration - an event can last up to 7 days maximum or 168 hours
- premises limits - maximum 15 TENs per calendar year per premises, totalling no more than 21 days
- applicants must be over 18 years of age
Individual limits for TENs:
- non-personal licence holders may give up to 5 TENs per calendar year, including no more than 2 Late TENs
- personal licence holders may give up to 50 TENs per calendar year, including no more than 10 Late TENs
Notice periods:
- a standard TEN must be given at least 10 clear working days before the event
- a late TEN must be given no later than 5 clear working days before the event
'Clear working days' excludes:
- the day the notice is given to the licensing authority
- the day of the event
- weekends and bank holidays
For standard TENs, if the police or environmental health make an objection, a licensing panel hearing will be held, usually virtually.
Conditions may be added to the TEN if there is a premises licence in force.
A late TEN will be automatically rejected if an objection is received from either the police or environmental health.
