Heritage Statements: Desk Based Assessment
Desk Based Assessment (DBA)
A desk based assessment (DBA) determines – as far as is reasonably possible from existing records – the nature, extent and significance of the historic environment within a development site. It also considers the likely impact of proposed development on that significance or will identify the need for further investigations in order to do so. It is important to make sure the assessment of significance remains objective and separate to the assessment of the impacts of the development.
A desk based assessment is usually undertaken by an appropriately qualified heritage specialist, in line with the Sussex Archaeological Standards: Annex A and CIfA (Chartered Institute for Archaeologists) Standard and Guidance: Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessment
A register of appropriately qualified specialists is held by CIfA
