School Streets
Find out what School Streets are, how they work, where they are in Brighton & Hove, and who is exempt from restrictions.
About School Streets
School Streets schemes are designed to address issues on the roads around schools at drop off and pick up times, including congestion and illegal or unsafe parking immediately outside of school.
This is achieved by restricting access to motor vehicles on the roads around schools for one hour at each end of the day, during drop off and pick up times.
How School Streets work
School Streets are only in force during school term time. They do not operate on weekends or during school holidays. Check school term calendars for Brighton & Hove
Motor vehicles are not allowed to enter the restricted area during enforcement hours unless exempt. The entrances to School Streets are marked by signs that inform road users of the restrictions and enforcement hours. In some areas, approved enforcement cameras will be used to monitor the road during the restricted times.
In addition to signage and cameras, School Streets may operate with staffed gates, bollards, temporary barriers or other traffic management devices which are managed by School Streets volunteers or school staff.
Any vehicles without an exemption ignoring the restrictions may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £70, reduced to £35 if paid in 21 days.

Camera-enforced zones and virtual permits
Some of our School Street zones are now enforced by cameras. If you require access to a camera-enforced School Street zone whilst it is in operation, you'll need to apply for a virtual permit. We strongly recommend that you apply well in advance, as we may need up to 10 working days to process your application.
The following School Street sites are camera enforced and you will need a permit as of the date listed in the table.
