What heritage assets are affected by the proposals?

The first main step in writing a heritage statement is to find out what heritage assets might be affected by your proposals.  A heritage asset is identified in the National Planning Policy Framework (2012) as a "building, monument, site, place, area or landscape identified as having a degree of significance meriting consideration in planning decisions, because of its heritage interest".

There may be heritage assets on the site itself which would be physically affected by the proposals.   There may also be heritage assets adjacent to the site or within its setting which may be affected visually, or in other ways in which the asset is ‘experienced’.

The Historic Environment Record (HER) provides a record of the city’s known archaeological and historic sites, and is the baseline dataset referenced by the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).   The HER Officer can provide a service to identify heritage assets on a particular site for you.  Where relevant, this service will also include useful information on the history of the site, such as what is shown on historic maps of the area.  This may show where there are gaps in current knowledge of the site or potential for non-designated heritage assets to exist.
